Global Green and Healthy Hospitals is Pleased to Announce the New and Improved Health Care Climate Challenge

The new Health Care Climate Challenge has a new name, a new look, a new anaesthetic gas measurement tool, and exciting new opportunities for participants to work toward 100% renewable electricity and carbon neutrality.

Since it began three years ago as the 2020 Health Care Climate Challenge, the initiative has grown to include more than 160 institutions, representing the interests of over 14,000 hospitals and health centers in 24 countries committed to taking meaningful action to address “the biggest public health threat of the 21st Century”, climate change.

By 2018, Challenge participants had collectively reported commitments to reduce their carbon emissions by more than 16 million metric tons—the equivalent of:

A year of carbon emissions from 4 coal fired power plants

Saving an estimated U.S. $1.7 billion in health costs related to air pollution

Participants also report saving U.S. $381 million through energy efficiency and renewable energy generation.

The threats posed by climate change continue to grow, with people the world over already experiencing the impacts. The urgency for health care to play a leadership role in taking on the Climate Challenge is greater than ever.

CHANGES TO THE CHALLENGE

Projecting beyond the 2020 time horizon, as we know our collective work on this issue will extend well into the future, we are simplifying the name to the Health Care Climate Challenge.

We have a fresh new logo to accompany this along with exciting new tools and opportunities to support your work that we’ll be sharing more on in the coming months.


The new challenge will provide exciting opportunities to take your climate commitments to the next level by setting targets for 100% renewable electricity and carbon neutrality.


A new anesthetic impact calculator available in the Hippocrates Data Center will allow you to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions related to the use of anesthetic gases at your institution.
